Mystery Plant

I have a plant that's growing in the front of my house and in the neighbor's yard behind me.  It has small purple flowers and small 'berries' that turn red.  I like it but have no idea what it is.  Here are some pictures.

If anybody knows what this is, please let me know.  Thanks!

  1. I've seen this before but I don't know what it is! Pretty though!

  2. I believe this is "deadly nightshade" - a rather dark name for such a pretty vine. I think it is related to the potato plant, but is usually considered a weed and is highly toxic! The leaves and berries are very poisonous, especially to children, so do be careful with it.

  3. Now that I have a possible identification, I've done a little more research. Turns out this is not 'deadly nightshade' (also known as belladonna) but woody nightshade also known as bittersweet nightshade and many other names. Not QUITE as 'deadly' as deadly nightshade but still poisonous, but not to some birds who eat the berries and spread the seeds. It's considered a pest plant so I may end up pulling it out. Thanks!
