Colossal Coconut Crabs

Coconut crabs are the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world and are called coconut crabs because of their ability to crack coconuts with their large pincers.  It's also called a robber crab because of its attraction to shiny objects which they reportedly steal. Coconut crabs live on islands and in coastal areas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

They cannot swim and their diet consists mainly of fruit, nuts and seeds, and, of course, coconuts, with an occasion snack of tortoise eggs and hatchlings and carrion.  They've also been seen eating rats and other small mammals.  They vary in size and markings, but I think they're absolutely beautiful, not to mention a little other worldly.

Coconut crabs can weigh up to 30 or 40 pounds with a leg span of 3 feet.  They can live to be 30 to 60 years old and hide during the day in large burrows or rock crevices, using coconut husks as bedding, as well as when they are shedding their shell.  Its eight legs allows it to climb coconut trees, but usually to escape predators.  It prefers to eat coconuts that have already fallen to the ground.  Because it breathes air, its nose enables him to have a great sense of smell.

In many places they are considered a delicacy and great eating, but I think they're too pretty to eat!  And you would definitely need a doggie bag.
